Pittsburgh Birth Story | Midwife Center

Pittsburgh Birth Photographer – Mary Beth Miller Photography
…………………………………………

Here is the full blog post from a birth that I recently photographed at The Midwife Center for Birth in Pittsburgh!   I was very honored when a local photographer and friend asked me to document the birth of their fifth baby!   I also took maternity photos for her and this weekend I will be going to her home for some newborn photos!   Of all of the births that I have attended and photographed, this is the first time that so many older siblings were present to witness the birth of the new baby!    In addition to the three big sisters and a big brother, their Grandmother and an Aunt were there as well.  Her friend that is a videographer was also there to video the birth!   You can see her birth video here!   And in addition to all of the family and friends, there was also the wonderful staff at The Midwife Center which included a few midwives and nurses!   I think of all of the births that I have photographed, this may also be a record for the number of people in the birthing space to support the laboring Mom!

When I received the text that she was in labor and her water broke, I didn’t waste any time and headed into the city.   When I arrived, my friend and her husband were walking around the block in the city where the birthing center is located, to help get labor moving along.  Every time I photograph a birth at the Midwife Center, it brings back wonderful memories of the two times I was there to have my boys, Sam and Silas.  (I won’t even get into how much I regret not having my births photographed!)  And very recently, they opened the brand new addition to The Midwife Center making it the largest birth center in the nation!

After some laps around the block, they went inside and she walked up and down the long flight of stairs of the Midwife Center.
All of that walking brought on stronger and more intense contractions.

She then took comfort in the large bathtub as labor progressed and then onto the bed in the Ocean Room.
Not long after she got on the bed her labor transitioned and she began pushing baby out!

Mom and Dad decided to not find out the sex of the baby and I’ll admit, this always makes
the birth a little more exciting as we all waited to see if it was a boy or a girl!

It was so awesome to see the reactions of all of her children as they watched the midwife
and nurse help deliver their new baby sister and hand her over to Mom!

What an incredible honor it is for me to be invited into an intimate birthing space!   I never take for granted how very special it is to be able to witness such a powerful and important time in a family’s life.    It is just beyond amazing to be able to document the strength and power of a laboring woman and to be present to take photos of the first breaths that her baby takes.  Thank you to each and every family that has had me photograph the birth of their baby in the last eight years!

My dear friend Jenny is not only a wonderful Mama and photographer, but she also hosts a great podcast where she interviews and chats with some fabulous photographers!   It is not only for photographers to listen to, but for any parent that likes to take photos of their family!   Go check it out!
