As a Bloomfield newborn photographer with 15 years of experience working with families in their homes, I know just how overwhelming those first few weeks can feel after bringing home a new baby. Everything is new, sleep is minimal, and your house might feel like total chaos. That’s why when parents describe their newborn photo session as “low-stress,” I take that as the highest compliment I can receive.

This mom summed it up so beautifully in her review:
“Super low-stress newborn photos in the privacy of your own home. Mary Beth is so talented and captured amazing moments despite multiple crying episodes from the newborn. Highly recommend.”
If you take a look at my Google Reviews, you’ll see that words like “relaxed” and “low-stress” come up again and again. It means so much to me that families feel that way after working together.

That quote captures exactly what I always hope to create for families: a calm, flexible experience that feels easy and real. A session that reflects this sweet, yet much too short window when your baby is tiny, squishy, and still so new to the world.

For this sweet Bloomfield family, our morning together was quiet, cozy, and full of those little in-between moments I love to photograph. Their baby girl was two weeks old, wide-eyed and already showing so much personality. We spent most of the session in their small but beautifully lit nursery, where the light poured in through the windows and made everything feel extra soft and dreamy.

Despite what Mom’s review said, I honestly don’t remember much fussiness from this baby! She was so calm and content, both while she was awake and once she drifted off to sleep. But if she had been fussy? That’s totally normal and nothing I can’t work with. I’ve photographed hundreds of newborns, and I always make space for feeding, snuggling, soothing, or just pausing when a little reset is needed. I never rush. That’s part of what makes these sessions feel so peaceful.

One of the most memorable parts of this session, though? Their blind, hairless cat. It was undeniable who their first “baby” really was! He followed us throughout the house and even curled up nearby while I photographed the baby. It’s not every day I get to include such a unique and present pet in a session, and I loved that he was so involved.

After we wrapped up in the nursery, we stepped out onto their back patio for a few photos in the lush summer garden. It was quiet and sunny, and their baby girl was so peaceful out there. Their other sweet kitty, who was a little more shy, decided to make a brief appearance while we were outside in the backyard garden, and I’m so glad she did. She even showed me her trick of giving Mom a high five!! We captured some photos in the warm summer air before heading back inside to finish the session.

Sessions like this one are such a great reminder that you don’t need a perfectly styled house, a baby who sleeps the entire time, or a Pinterest-worthy setup to end up with images you love. You just need a calm space, a little flexibility, and someone who truly understands how newborn photo sessions actually go.

If you’re in Bloomfield, or anywhere in the Pittsburgh area, and are wondering if newborn photos at home are worth it, this is your sign that they absolutely are. You get to stay in your own space. You can take breaks. Your baby can just be themselves. And I’ll take care of the rest.
