Wondering what to wear for family photos? Skip the stress. Here’s a simple, real-life What to Wear Guide to comfortable outfits that feel natural and authentic.

As a lifestyle family photographer with over 15 years of experience, one of the most common questions I get before a family photo session is:
“What should we wear?”
And I completely understand why people ask.
Pinterest and Instagram make it seem like family photos require perfectly coordinated outfits, flowing dresses, matching (but not too matchy-matchy) color palettes, and a whole new wardrobe
But here’s the truth:
The best family photos aren’t about perfect outfits.
They’re about families who feel comfortable being themselves.
When everyone feels relaxed and like themselves, the photos feel natural and real, and those are the images families end up loving the most.
So if you’re stressing about what to wear for your family photo session, let’s make this easy and simple.
Disclaimer: This guide is for lifestyle family photo sessions with me, a photographer who embraces real life and most often photographs families at their homes! This would most likely not be good advice if you want fancy posed portraits or studio portraits!

Start With What’s Already in Your Closet
You don’t need to go shopping for your session.
In fact, I usually recommend not buying brand-new outfits just for photos.
New clothes can feel stiff, unfamiliar, or uncomfortable, especially for kids. And when someone feels uncomfortable in what they’re wearing, it shows.
Instead, choose clothes you already love wearing!
Think of the outfits you reach for on a normal day when you want to feel comfortable and like yourself.
That’s exactly what works best in photos, especially for a lifestyle family photo session!

A Simple Way to Think About It
Here’s a good starting point:
Mom, wear something you feel comfortable and confident in.
A favorite tee with jeans or leggings is perfectly fine.
Let your partner wear what they normally wear.
Trust me, most partners would much rather feel like themselves than be dressed up in something they never wear.
And kids?
Kids should look like kids.
If your four-year-old has a favorite dress she wears six days a week, that’s a great choice. It’s already part of her personality.
Those little details are what make photos feel authentic years later.

Casual + Comfortable = Better Photos
When kids feel comfortable, sessions are easier for everyone.
That means:
- No scratchy sweaters
- No stiff button-up shirts
- No uncomfortable shoes
- No outfits they constantly want to change out of
Instead, think soft, familiar, and easy to move in.
And if your child wants to wear a superhero cape or their favorite costume?
Honestly, I love that.
Those little glimpses of personality often become some of the most memorable images.

Why I Don’t Have a Client Closet
Some photographers offer a “client closet” with dresses and styled outfits for families to borrow.
While those photos can be beautiful, it’s not how I approach family photography.
I don’t want you to look like someone else.
I want you to look like you.
The version of your family that your kids recognize every day, relaxed, comfortable, and at home together.
Those are the moments that matter most.
Real Life Looks Good in Photos
My goal during family sessions isn’t to create perfectly styled images.
It’s to capture your family as you really are, laughing together, snuggling on the couch, playing with your kids, and simply being present with each other.
And when everyone is wearing something comfortable and familiar, those moments come much more naturally.

A Quick Reminder Before Your Session
If you take away one thing from this guide, let it be this:
You don’t need perfect outfits for meaningful family photos.
You just need to show up as yourselves.
