A Newborn Baby Photo Session With Older Siblings at their Pittsburgh Home

I often get emails from Mom’s that are expecting a 2nd, 3rd, 4th or even 5th child and they want to know if I can include older siblings into the photo session and my answer is “YES, ABSOLUTELY!” I always include older siblings AND the whole family into a newborn photo session and actually, these kind of sessions might just be my very favorite!

Don’t get me wrong, I love to photograph a couple of first time parents with their first baby, but there is something about the wonderfully fun chaos that comes with including older siblings into the photo session.

It’s not often enough that I get to photograph school aged siblings, they are usually in the toddler to preschool age group so it was a fun change to work with this awesome big brother and big sister!

I knew from the moment I arrived at their home that it was going to be a great session. The older two siblings met me at the front stoop to welcome me to their lovely Pittsburgh home!

I also knew from my many emails with Mom while we planned her session, that we were similar in many ways and we realized we shared very similar birth stories with three very different birth experiences. See, when I come to take photos, I am not just silently snapping away. I tend to chat a lot with the parents and the kids and I definitely think this helps all of us feel more comfortable!

I always tell my families there is no need to be nervous about our session. It really will feel like hanging out with an old friend for a few hours and not an awkward photo session!

After just 15 minutes in their home I felt like I had known this family for many years! While Mom fed baby brother, the older kids showed me their rooms and I got to know so much more about each of them. I loved seeing so many photos on the walls of their home and I knew that this family truly valued photos. It made me happy to think that soon my images would also grace the walls of their lovely home.

“I love those photos – they capture Lucy and Emmett totally in their natural setting and years from now I’ll be able to remember exactly what they were like when they were comfortable in their own [slightly messy] rooms.” -Mom

I also know that this Mama knows just how very fast these kids tend to grow up and it was very important to her to capture images of not only her newest bundle of sweetness, but of the whole family together.

Although the focus of my newborn session is on the baby, and I capture images of just the baby, my main goal is to capture the love the entire family has for the new little one they have welcomed into their home.

I also love to get photos of the older kids with the parents, without the baby, of just the older siblings together and of just Mom and Dad together. My clients galleries are just full of a wide assortment of images, with and without the baby!

Before I wrap up shooting a session and put my camera in my bag, I always ask my families if there is anything special that they want me to capture before I leave. Dad mentioned that he would love if I got some photos of his daughter in the hammock. One of her favorite past times is swinging really high in the back yard hammock and I loved getting a series of photos of her in it!

Thank you so much to the J family for welcoming me into your home for a few hours to capture your new baby boy and the rest of your wonderful family! I would love to do it again in the future!
