Over the last 15 years, I’ve had the honor of photographing many newborns and young children throughout the Pittsburgh area. However, some of the most meaningful sessions I’ve ever photographed have not taken place in a home or nursery, but in a hospital room.
I’ve had the privilege of meeting so many incredible families whose babies or young children required specialized care in the neonatal or pediatric intensive care units at Pittsburgh-area hospitals.

If your baby or child is in the hospital for an extended stay and their care team is okay with visitors other than immediate family, I’d be happy to come to the hospital and take some photos for you.
Every family’s story looks different, and every hospital session is unique. Whether it’s the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), or Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, West Penn Hospital, or Magee Women’s Hospital, I approach each session with great sensitivity and care.

I’ve photographed babies surrounded by wires, tubes, and monitors, and I’m always incredibly grateful for the amazing nurses who are more than willing to help reposition babies or move equipment so parents can have beautiful images of their child. The safety and comfort of your little one is always my top priority, and having a nurse nearby adds an extra layer of support to help ensure that.
You don’t need to worry about how your baby looks, whether they’re hooked up to monitors, or whether you’re “photo-ready.” I know how overwhelming this all can be, so you don’t need to do anything to prepare. Depending on your little one’s situation, I do my best to gently hide wires, tubes, and other medical equipment using swaddles and blankets. I’ll also edit some of these things out when possible.

Because I know this time can be overwhelming and often unexpected, I offer a reduced fee for hospital-based sessions. My goal is to make it as easy and accessible as possible for you to have these memories preserved.
If you or a loved one finds themselves in this situation, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Just send me a message. If for any reason I’m not available, I’ll be happy to connect you with another talented photographer with experience in this area.

Over the years, I’ve had the honor of working with many families during incredibly tender and difficult times. I’ve volunteered with organizations such as, Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep, The Magic Hour Foundation, as well as with local hospice groups and the bereavement and end-of-life care teams at Pittsburgh-area hospitals.

Beautifully written, Mary Beth. I love how your sensitivity and care for your clients translates to hospital sessions as well. Some of my favorite images of my own children are our hospital photographs.
You’re amazing for being able to work around wires, tubes, and monitors to capture beautiful images. I’m sure the parents will cherish these!
These are really beautiful, and so special and important for these parents!
Oh this post gives me all the emotions. Thank you for documenting families who are in the NICU. What a treasure for them
These are such special memories you’re able to document for these families!
