As a Boardman Newborn Photographer, I always want to include the older siblings in the newborn photo session! In fact, this is kind of my thing. 😉
Including toddler-aged siblings in the photos with a new baby can sometimes be challenging, but more often than not, these little ones surprise me with how great they are with their new baby brother or sister.
This little guy was no exception! He was so gentle and sweet with his new baby brother. However, kiddos at this age have a pretty short attention span. If fact, I find it quite amusing when they gently cradle the baby for 8 seconds and then declare they are “all done!” and want the baby off of them.
And this is completely normal! This is why I always have a parent within arms reach to grab the baby when big brother or sister is all finished holding the baby. (safety 1st!)
When this happens, I just capture more photos of baby alone or with one of the parents, and then we ask the big brother or sister if they want to hold the baby again, kiss the baby, count his toes, etc. I have a lot of tricks up my sleeve to encourage some sweet interactions between the siblings and then I have to be pretty fast at capturing that moment because they are usually relatively brief!
Here’s a blog post with Tips for Including Toddler Siblings in Newborn Photos!
One of the many perks of having a newborn photo session at your home is that the older siblings feel more comfortable in their own space.
They can run around, play with their favorite toys, take a rest on the couch, grab a snack or a sippy cup, or whatever makes them happy! Even if that means climbing in and out of the crib a few times! (this crib belonged to him before he passed it on to baby brother!)
And with an at-home lifestyle newborn session, I capture the moments as they happen rather than trying to formally pose everyone. This keeps things a little more relaxing and stress-free.
As a Mom to three boys, I know how important it is for Mamas to have images with both of their babies. I always try to get all the kiddos cuddling up with Mom. I have very few of these kinds of images with my boys (I’ll save discussing those regrets for another blog post) but I believe those regrets are what make me a better photographer.
I know some photographers might have deleted the image with Mom’s hand cradling the baby’s head or her hair getting in the photo, but I actually love these!
I have so many more images I want to share from this in-home newborn photo session! Stay tuned for another blog post with more photos from this lifestyle shoot! Sometimes I overshare and need to make at least 2 blog posts!
