In my last few posts, I covered When to Contact a Newborn Photographer and How Old Your Baby Should be for Newborn Photos. In this post, I’ll talk about how long a newborn photo session will last.
As a Pittsburgh Newborn Photographer that has been photographing babies for over thirteen years, my short answer to the question is: around two hours long.
However, this is how long, on average, my newborn photo sessions last. If you go to another photographer, it may only be around an hour (or shorter!) or it can be up to three or four hours long.
If you are hiring a studio or at-home newborn photographer that poses your baby, they may need to take a lot of time to settle the baby and get them into a deep sleep. Sometimes this needs to be done multiple times throughout a session, which is the most time-consuming aspect of a posed newborn photo session.
I no longer pose newborns nor do I use a bunch of props, so as a lifestyle newborn photographer I do not need to take a long time to settle babies and get them into a deep sleep.
There are some factors that can determine how long my newborn sessions can last. Since I always want to include siblings in my sessions, this can be the main reason sessions will last longer. It can also depend on how many siblings and their ages. Usually, when there are toddler siblings, this can take a little longer depending on how cooperative they feel that day. 😆
I also let the baby run the show for my sessions. So depending how many times they want to eat or how many diaper changes they need, this can determine how long the session will last.
The most important thing to know is, I never set strict time constraints on my newborn photo sessions. Although they usually last two hours long, it is more than ok if your session takes longer! I never want families to feel rushed and I never want to feel rushed so we will take all the time that we need.
