This week we took 20-some homeschool kids to an elderly care home to help decorate cookies with them for Valentine’s Day. This is our 5th visit and they just love having the kids around for a few hours. I think it is so very important for kids, especially my children, to have this experience with the elderly. My Mother worked with the elderly when I was young, so I frequented these homes often. For me, it was like they were all adopted Grandparents. I only ever had my paternal Grandparent’s and both died when I was very young.
It is not always easy for kids to be in a room full of elderly people, and it can actually be scary for a child. We make sure to prepare the children and we never force them to interact. However, not one of these children had a hard time and each one interacted with the patients. Here are some of the photos I captured that day.
One of the families also brought a puppy!
