The other day, while I was in an Instagram scroll hole, avoiding all the things, I came across a reel with a clip from The Office.

And it hit me harder than I expected.
Back when I was raising three little boys while running my photography business, I was in survival mode. Life felt loud, messy, chaotic, and exhausting. There were toys everywhere. Someone always needed something. The laundry was never done. The days felt long.
At the time, I didn’t realize I was living in the days I would one day miss.
But now, looking back, I know.
Those were the good old days.

If you’re in the middle of that phase right now, it probably doesn’t feel like it. You’re busy. You’re tired. Your house is a disaster. Your calendar is full. Most days feel like you’re simply trying to make it to bedtime.
And somewhere on that never-ending to-do list is “schedule family photos.”
Maybe.
More likely, it’s been moved to next month. Or next season. Or next year.
I get it.
Because I did the same thing.
I told myself I’d schedule photos when life slowed down. When the house was cleaner. When I lost a few pounds. When the kids were older. When everything felt a little less chaotic.
But here’s what I learned:
There is no perfect time.
And “next year” has a way of turning into five.
Before you know it, the baby who needed help getting dressed is driving a car. The toddler who followed you everywhere suddenly has plans with friends. The little kid who wanted to hold your hand is now taller than you.
I know because I’ve lived it.

And if I could go back and give my younger self one piece of advice, it would be this:
Take the photos.
Not because everything is perfect.
Because it isn’t.
Take the photos because this season of life matters.
The ordinary Tuesday afternoons matter.
The toys scattered across the living room matter.
The way your child climbs into your lap without asking matters.
The missing front tooth, the favorite stuffed animal, the superhero cape they wear three days a week, the way your baby curls into your chest.
Those are the details that disappear the fastest.
When I photograph families, I’m not chasing perfection.
I’m not trying to create a version of your life that doesn’t exist.
I’m trying to help you hold onto this chapter while you’re still living it.

Because one day you’ll look back and realize that the things that felt ordinary were actually extraordinary.
The chaos.
The noise.
The mess.
The sticky fingerprints.
The endless requests for snacks.
The bedtime stories.
The cuddles.
The laughter.
The way your family is right now.
Those are the things you’ll miss.
That’s why I do what I do.
Not for perfect photos.
Not for matching outfits.
Not for social media.

I do it because these years are fleeting.
I do it because your children are changing in ways you don’t even notice from day to day.
I do it because I know how much these images will mean to you years from now.
So consider this a gentle nudge from a mom who is already on the other side of the little-kid years.
Stop waiting for the perfect time.
It doesn’t exist.
You don’t get this season back.
And having photographs of it will matter more than you can imagine.
These are the good old days.
Even if it doesn’t feel like it right now.
