As a Wexford Photographer, it’s important for me to share with potential clients what a session in their home could look like. Although I share a small selection of images from different sessions with different families on social media, I think seeing a blog post with a lot of images from one session with one family can really show the bigger picture. Perhaps this is why my blog posts are always very image heavy…
This session was mostly to welcome their sweet new baby boy into the family, but it was important for the mom that we take photos of the whole family. It is also important for me to capture the whole family during a photo session! You will rarely see me do a session with just a baby or child that does not include the entire family.
It’s also important for me to get a lot of photos of the 1st “baby” with just mom and dad. Especially with a toddler-aged older sibling because I want to make sure they feel special and included. And I know most parents want to make sure of this after they bring home a new baby.
Being just a little under two years old, and like most toddlers, this big brother was not exactly interested in the new little human in the house. Although his baby brother was already two months old, he was still not keen on getting too close to him.
And that is absolutely ok! After doing this for well over a decade, I have a lot of tricks up my sleeve to get the siblings as close as possible. Thankfully, a few of my tricks worked and I was able to get photos of all four of them together and a few of just the brothers.
You can read about those tricks in this blog post, TIPS FOR INCLUDING TODDLER SIBLINGS IN NEWBORN PHOTOS.
One of the tricks I used here was to get Mom and her older son all comfy and relaxed in the rocking chair reading a book together. Then I had dad quickly stick baby brother onto Mom’s lap. Thankfully big brother was ok with this situation long enough for me to snag a series of sweet photos that I know this Momma will cherish forever.
For this session, we started out taking a few photos in their living room then we moved upstairs for photos in the nursery, big brothers’ bedroom, then some in their spare bedroom. When I shoot in clients’ homes, I like to do the majority of the images in a room that gets the best lighting, and thankfully big brothers’ room had so much natural light! And this worked out perfectly as big brother was most content spending time in his bedroom with his books and toys.
I absolutely love that when Mom and Dad went to change and feed the baby, this sweet guy climbed up on his chair, grabbed a book, and proceed to sit down and “read” it. This gave me a wonderful opportunity to get some very sweet photos of just him in his chair. Mom and Dad said he LOVES books and it reminded me so much of my 1st son!
Another trick or tactic I used for this session was to get Mom, Dad, and the baby all set up and cozy at the end of the bed together. Big brother was across the hall playing in his room so I went to see if I could get him to join Mom and Dad.
I made sure he was ok with me picking him up and I asked him if he wanted to fly over into the next room to Mom and Dad and he happily agreed. So with the camera ready in one hand, I put this sweet guy on my hip and “flew” him through the hallway into Mom’s waiting arms. Then I grabbed my camera and snapped as many photos as I could before he decided he was done. 😆
And not seen here is me, holding his stuffed bear behind the camera and having the bear fly and sit on my camera. Just a few more of the tricks I use to get little ones to look my way for a few photos.
As always, it means so much to me when I get to return to a client’s home multiple times to document their family together! I am so grateful for this family to invite me again into their lovely Wexford home to meet baby S and to see how very grown-up big brother H is now!
I also photographed this adorable big brother when he was a baby!
