While spending time on Facebook, especially in local Mom’s groups, I often see posts from parents asking for recommendations for “affordable” family or newborn photographers in Pittsburgh. Oftentimes, the poster will ask for someone who does not cost an “arm and a leg” or “cost a small fortune”…
I have to admit, that as an experienced photographer, those phrases tend to strike a nerve… However, I know the person making these posts does not realize how those phrases can make a majority of photographers feel. But I promise you, we do not think our work is worth body parts or small fortunes!
And no, I am not going to go off on a tangent about why I charge what I charge, how much it costs to run a business, how much time I put into every session, how much I pay in taxes, or how this is not a side gig or hobby..but my chosen full-time career that helps pay my mortgage, keep my lights on, and feed my kids…
Although it is always very tempting to explain why I (and other photographers) charge what we do, I also very much understand that some photographers, like myself, are not in everyone’s photo session budget.
I especially understand given the current economy! But the current economy is also part of the reason I charge what I do. Gas, food, and the cost of living are silly expensive in 2024 and I need to earn enough to live.
The good news is, that there are many talented photographers in Pittsburgh (and almost every city) that will fit your ideal budget for a photo session! And, there are almost always photographers offering mini sessions which are usually very affordable!
Although I do not offer mini-sessions, they can be found year-round, especially around holidays and seasons like Easter, Mother’s Day, Spring, and Christmas. Usually, a Google or Facebook search will help you find a mini-session photographer!
And although I am not at a price point for everyone, I do offer three digital collections to choose from. I choose to do it this way so my lowest digital collection is more attainable for more families and so you do not have to commit to purchasing all of the images from your photo session.
I even have my customers wait until they see their entire gallery of edited images before they decide on what collection they want. My clients do not have to commit to or pay for a collection before they see their online gallery.
So although I would LOVE to be your newborn or family photographer, I understand that I am not the photographer for every family.
I also offer payment plans and I have a First Year package! This means you receive a great discount for booking three sessions within 18 months. For example, you can choose from a maternity, Fresh 48 hospital session, in-home newborn session, and milestone sessions; 3 months, 6 months, 1 year/first birthday.

And if you ever find yourself in a local Facebook group looking for a photographer or recommendations for any other type of service (ie; mechanic, lawncare, nanny, etc) please reconsider your words and do not assume we all want you to have to sell body parts to afford our services. Running a small business is not easy and most of us are just trying to make a living.
