Birth Centers, Homebirth Midwives and Doulas in the Pittsburgh Area

As a Pittsburgh Birth Photographer, I have had the opportunity to work alongside some of Pittsburgh’s best midwives and doulas! In this post, I am going to list some of them for you.

In Pennsylvania, we have two types of midwives.

  • Certified nurse midwives (CNMW) can not attend homebirths but they attend births at the Midwife Center and at some of our local area hospitals like Magee, West Penn, and Jefferson.
  • Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) will attend homebirths.

Please read this article for further details.

Pittsburgh Birth Centers:

Unfortunately, Pittsburgh only has one freestanding birth center. Fortunately, the one that we have is amazing! I had two of my babies here! If you have any questions about my experience, I am happy to share, just send me a message!

I think it is important to note, unlike hiring a home birth midwife, you will not be connected to just one midwife during your pregnancy. At TMC, much like an OBGYN practice, although they do their very best that you get to know each midwife on staff, you will get whoever is on call when you go into labor.

However, all of their midwives are amazing to work with!

Pittsburgh Homebirth Midwives:

While there are more midwives in the Pittsburgh area, these are the three that I have attended births with and that are currently accepting new birth clients.

Here are the Midwife groups that are associated with a few of the Pittsburgh area hospitals:

Pittsburgh Doulas / Doula Services:

Most of these doulas will attend births at the hospital, birthing center, or home birth. Although there are many more doulas in the Pittsburgh area, these are the doulas (doula services) that I have had the pleasure to meet and/or attend a birth with.
