Is Two Months Too Old for a Newborn Photo Session? | Oakmont Newborn Photographer

As an experienced newborn photographer who has been photographing babies for almost fifteen years, my answer is no, two months is not too old for newborn photos! I often get messages from new moms who are worried they have missed the time frame for booking their newborn photoshoot.

Below, I’ll discuss the pros and cons of photographing your baby at two months old and I’ll share images from my session with a precious baby girl and her parents in their beautiful home in the Oakmont neighborhood of Pittsburgh. Their sweet baby girl was just over a one-month-old for our newborn session, but I often photograph babies that are two months old, or older!

According to Google, a baby is considered a newborn between birth and one OR two months old. There seem to be some differing opinions out there! Regardless of what Google tells us, I believe two months old is still a perfect time for a newborn photo shoot!

However, please be aware that I am a lifestyle photographer and I do not place babies into all of the fancy poses that some studio newborn photographers do! I believe in photographing a baby more naturally and I do not need them to be brand new and tiny for their newborn photos.

Photographers that do all of the posing also need your baby in a deep sleep and this is usually easier for them the younger your baby is. Some of these photographers want your baby to be under two weeks old and will often do the session when the baby is 4-10 days old!

So please be aware that if you prefer a studio-style newborn session that includes a variety of fancy poses with a lot of swaddles and props, your photographer will most likely want to schedule your session when your baby is still very brand new! So please plan accordingly and contact photographers a few months before the baby is due.

However, as I mentioned, I’m an in-home lifestyle photographer and I am happy to photograph your baby at any age! A majority of the families I work with do not contact me until after they had their baby. Although it is best to get on my schedule before your due date, I will do my best to fit you in on my schedule if you contact me after your baby is born.

Here are some of the perks of waiting until your baby is older for a photo session:

  • I believe one of the most important points is that Mom has time to recover, rest, and adjust to life with a newborn before their photo session.
  • Waiting longer is also great for some older (mainly toddler) siblings to adjust to having a new baby in their home.
  • Your baby is more awake. This is not great for posed photos, but I love photos of an awake baby!
  • Baby starts filling out a bit and puts on a little more of that adorable baby weight.
  • Baby starts to show more personality, we may even get some of those first smiles!

And here are the cons to waiting until your baby is two months or older:

  • Your baby is not tiny and brand new. They grow and change so much in those first two weeks.
  • Your baby is harder to pose if you want posed newborn photos.

Ok, I’ll admit, as a lifestyle newborn photographer, I cannot come up with many cons! However, I am sure a studio photographer could list more!

And now, here are a lot more images from my session with baby G, her Mom, Dad, and her adorable big (fur) sister! Their doggo was so very gentle around the baby and wanted to check on her while she was in this heirloom cradle that had been passed down through the family!

I love incorporating items like this into photo sessions which is another great perk to having a newborn photo session in your home!
